How can Christians shine on Halloween?
Each year Halloween seems to get bigger and bigger and last longer and longer. Shop windows are filled with cobwebs and scary masks and houses are lit up with goons and chilling pumpkins. Christians debate whether to participate in Halloween or not – some see it as a sinister celebration of evil, others as harmless fun.
Wherever you stand, there’s a huge opportunity for Christians and churches to open their doors on October 31st and share Jesus, the True Light, with those who don’t know him.
Many parents feel uneasy about sending their children off to strangers houses to get sweets, when this is something they would normally tell them never to do. There are also concerns about road safety and what is actually in the sweets that children are being given.
Churches can use the occasion of Halloween as a perfect opportunity to be sharing the Gospel with both children and parents. There are lots of great (and FREE) resources available for you to use as a alternative to traditional Halloween-themed party props.
Scripture Union produces Light Party packs. These contain ideas of games, crafts and more, that you will need to run an amazing Light Party for people ages 5-18.
World Vision have also created a wonderful resource for children ages 4-10 based on a character called Patch the Pumpkin. There is a video, book and lots of game ideas for you to use.
For teens you could host a pumpkin carving workshop. Encourage them to carve joyful images into their pumpkins such as hearts, smiling faces or just a nice pattern as opposed to scary monsters.
If you already have some ideas for your light party this year CPO have some posters and invites that you can use to publicise your events. Why not base your party around one of the following verses?
John 1:5 – The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Phillipians 4:8 – Finally, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
If you are hosting a light party this year, we’d love to hear what you are doing. Tell us your ideas and send us some pictures.
